Food and Drink

At Colebrook we encourage healthy eating!

Milk is available at morning break. It is currently free to children under 5 but from their fifth birthday there is a small charge. We ask that payment for milk is made half termly in advance please. If your child drinks milk we will advise you as soon as payment becomes due. Credit will be given for milk not consumed due to absence through illness. Children may bring plastic bottles of water, clearly labelled with their name, to drink during the day, but we insist that these are washed and filled at home, please. We also have drinking fountains and no reasonable requests for drinks are refused.

Reception children only will be provided with a nutritious snack before morning break. Children will take turns to prepare and distribute the food. We do ask for a donation of 50p per week to cover the cost.

We are happy for children in Years 1 and 2 to bring fresh fruit or vegetables, such as carrot or celery to eat at morning break. To encourage healthy eating and to keep down litter, we do not allow children to bring sweets, crisps or biscuits to eat at morning break. We also take part in the 5 a day Fruit and Vegetable Scheme for Infant Schools and your child will also receive a free piece of fruit each day, except for the first day back after each holiday. These are usually eaten during the afternoons.

Due to increasing costs we are sadly no longer able to provide a cooked mid-day meal but children may bring packed lunches to school. We place no restrictions on what your child may bring to eat at lunch time, but we do ask that it is something they can deal with themselves. If you send yoghurt etc. you should also include a spoon. Please include a flask or bottle (not glass) containing water.  This should be in addition to any water bottle your child may use in the classroom. Spillages of fruit juice and sweet drinks can cause sticky patches on the floor. Mid-day supervisors do not have the time or equipment to deal with these adequately and if left they could pose a threat of injury during P.E. or dance activities. Lunches should be packed in a clearly named plastic container.

N.B. If you are on Income Support, Income Based Job Seekers Allowance or think your child may be entitled to free school meals, please telephone the Local Authority on 463061. They will be happy to advise you. Free school meals will be served as a packed lunch. It is helpful to the school if you register your entitlement even if you do not wish to claim it.

All the children have at least half an hour to eat their meals. At the beginning of the school year we ensure that the youngest children have even longer. We ask the children to sit quietly whilst they are eating but we allow quiet conversation when they have finished. During the lunchtime break some items of P.E. equipment are available and the dinner ladies play games with the children.
