Special
Educational Needs
We follow the Code
of Practice for Special Educational Needs issued by the DfES in 2002. We have a policy for children with Special Educational
Needs. This is reviewed annually. At the last review no changes were made. Copies of all school policies are available.
We aim to provide
all children, whatever their ability, with programmes of study which are appropriate to their needs. In the majority of cases
this is with the class teacher in the class situation. Often in literacy or numeracy children who are experiencing difficulties
will work with the support of a Teaching Assistant. Sometimes, with parental agreement, a child will be withdrawn to work
with a small group of children on specific tasks away from the classroom where there are fewer distractions. The children
enjoy this extra attention and benefit in many ways from the excellent support provided. If your child’s progress in
any area is giving us cause for concern, we will ask you to come in and talk to us, so that together we can work out ways
in which to help them.
Pupils with disabilities
We welcome all pupils
to Colebrook. If you feel your child may need specialist equipment to help them at school, please come in and discuss it with
us so that appropriate arrangements can be made. Our equal opportunities policy is rigorously enforced to ensure that children
with disabilities are not treated less favourably than other children. Our building is partially accessible to children in
wheelchairs. In the future we plan to purchase extra ramps, install handrails where necessary and convert an existing toilet
so that it can be used by disabled adults.
