The Foundation Stage
In the
Foundation Stage children work towards the Early Learning Goals. These cover 6 areas of learning. Language & Literacy includes speaking, listening, reading and writing. In Mathematics children learn about 5 broad areas, shape, space and position, patterns, measures and in particular,
number. Knowledge & Understanding of the World focuses on developing children’s
awareness of their environment, other people and the man made world. This provides a basis for later historical, geographic,
scientific and technological learning. Physical Development includes developing
physical control, mobility, awareness of space and manipulative skills indoors and out. Creative
Development covers a wide range of experiences in art, craft, music, dance, story making and imaginative play. Personal & Social Education covers the very important area of relationships.
Young children
often express their feelings through play. Play is a child’s work. It is the way in which they discover new things about
the world and about themselves, develop new skills and build relationships with new friends. Please don’t worry if,
when you ask your child what they have done at school, they say, “Oh we just played.”
