Behaviour Policy

Behaviour Policy

Aims

1. To promote good behaviour, including good manners, as the norm

2.  To produce a safe and secure environment where all can learn without anxiety.

3.  To ensure that every member of the school community feels valued and respected, and that each person is treated fairly and well.

4. To outline sanctions for inappropriate behaviour

Method

 1. All staff will encourage children to behave well by commending good behaviour to the child/children concerned, other children, other members of staff or their parents. Positive reinforcement of good behaviour should be the norm rather than frequently drawing attention to children who misbehave.

 2. Inappropriate behaviour causing disruption, or which is potentially dangerous will be stopped. The member of staff will check that the child understands why it has been stopped. An explanation will be given to any child who does not understand why their behaviour or actions are unacceptable.

 3. If one child has upset or injured another, whether deliberately or accidentally, they will be expected to apologise. Children who find it difficult to play sociably together will be directed to different ends of the playground. Any reported incidents of bullying will be taken seriously and dealt with appropriately.

 4. A child repeating unacceptable behaviour will be punished by one of the following:- loss of privilege such as free choice time, missing all or part of playtime or spending it with the duty teacher, or by mentioning the incident to a parent. At no time will punishment ever involve a child being sent out of view of the member of staff censuring the child unless the child is handed over to another member of staff. When censuring a child the member of staff should always make it clear to the child that it is their behaviour which is unacceptable and not them personally.

 5. Different types of behaviour / rules will be discussed at least once a year either as part of the curriculum or during assemblies. These will include children’s relationships with each other, with property and the environment and safety rules for moving about the building / grounds and use of equipment.

 6. Should a member of staff notice any child being disruptive in assembly or similar whole school situation, they will move the child to a position near them as unobtrusively as possible and talk to the child at an appropriate time. If a child is consistently disruptive in assembly, he or she will be put on a warning board and a further offence will lead to the child losing 5 minutes of their extra playtime on a Friday.

 7. T.A.s and M.D.S.A.s will inform the class teacher if a child’s behaviour is unacceptable.

 8. The headteacher will be informed of persistent offenders or single misdemeanours of a serious nature i.e. those involving deliberate injury to another child or property.

 9. If a child’s behaviour gives cause for concern on a regular basis, say over half a term, the class teacher will inform the SENCO and the parents will be asked to come into school to discuss the matter. 10. The class teacher will monitor the child’s behaviour and if no improvement is evident parents will be consulted again and an Individual Behaviour Plan will be drawn up in consultation with the SENCO. This will equate to School Action or Early Years Action of the SEN Code of Practice.

11. If this is unsuccessful such outside agencies as the SENCO / headteacher deem appropriate will be involved. This will equate to School Action Plus or Early Years Action Plus of the Code of Practice.

12. The staff will monitor the building and grounds and report any areas in which bad behaviour is regularly observed to the headteacher. Should any trouble spots emerge, staff will discuss and investigate ways of improving the situation.
