Teaching and Learning Policy
This policy was developed from the Aims of our school.
Aims
1. To enable children to learn effectively
by using appropriate organisational strategies and employing teaching techniques, which recognise the learning styles of the
children in the group
2. To enhance children’s self esteem
through success
3. To provide a secure, safe and stimulating
environment
4. To promote good relationships
5. To encourage independence and individuality
6. To provide each child with similar experiences
and an equal entitlement to the curriculum
7. To enable children to see themselves as
part of the wider community
Method
1.1 by using a mixture of individual, group,
and whole class teaching; groupings should be carefully planned and appropriate for the task; there should be a manageable
number of teaching groups with appropriately differentiated learning activities provided at any one time
1.2 by carefully planned and focused use of teaching time, encompassing giving clear instructions, skilful questioning,
explanations appropriate to the understanding of the child and continuous assessment
1.3 by setting realistic
deadlines for the completion fo work, making a note of work not completed on time (see marking policy)
1.4 by using clearly
established classroom routines and systems which are standard across the classes (see PSHE Guidelines and Staff Handbook)
1.5 by providing
opportunities for children to question and by answering children’s questions about tasks / activities.
1.6 by purposeful
intervention in children’s work, encouraging them to think and to use knowledge / skills already acquired and by providing
feedback during lessons
1.7 by appropriate
use of teacher demonstration
1.8 by clearly stating
the subject area being taught and the learning intentions at the beginning of each lesson
1.9 by making criteria
for assessment explicit to the children and by rigorous and regular monitoring of pupil progress (see policy for ARR)
1.10 by having a sound understanding of the subject matter to be taught
and close familiarity with National Curriculum programmes of study / Foundation Stage Stepping Stones and any other statutory
or non-statutory guidance
1.11 by having a sound knowledge of the pupils’ current levels
of attainment and the levels to which they should be progressing
2.1 by giving praise
where praise is due and ensuring that criticism whether written or oral is constructive
2.2 by encouraging
the sharing of good work and good behaviour with other pupils, staff and parents and through Golden “sharing”
Assemblies.
2.3 by valuing work
through appropriate handling, mounting and display
2.4 by providing
suitable differentiated, but appropriately challenging work so that all children can enjoy success
3.1 Staff will always
be present in the pod when the children arrive
3.2 The grounds
will be developed to support the curriculum and encourage imaginative play
3.3 The playground
gate will be closed at break times. Morning break will usually be supervised by a member of the teaching staff and a T.A.
Lunchtimes break will be supervised by 1 M.D.S.A. for each class. Appropriate safety measures as detailed in the Health and
Safety policy and Staff Handbook will be taken for all activities
3.4 A variety of
interactive, informative and stimulating displays will be provided. ~these will be changed at lest termly
3.5 The induction
programme will gradually familiarise children and parents with our school
(see admission procedures for details)
4.1 By example,
discussion and the application of the golden rules and Hall Rules, staff will encourage respect for others and their feelings,
regardless of age, gender or other divisions
4.2 Staff will liase
with the local pre-school, junior school, cluster schools and early years settings, through visits, attending performances
and meetings
4.3 Staff will welcome
parents as partners in their child’s education. They will be encouraged to support their children’s learning at
home, and if possible, to help in school. A brief outline of the areas to be
covered will be sent home each term.
4.4 Curriculum evenings
or workshop sessions will be held as appropriate
4.5 Parents will
be asked to sign to say they agree to the terms of the Home School Agreement
4.6 A welcome evening
for parents with children about to start in reception will be held during each Summer Term
4.7 Two parent discussion
evenings will be held during the course of each year for parents with children already at school
5.1 by allowing
easy access to resources and materials through efficient organisation and clear labelling
5.2 by teaching
children to respect equipment, resources and materials by looking after them and leaving them they way they would like to
find them
5.3 by encouraging
children to help one another by assisting with tasks such as dressing, tying shoe laces, putting on aprons, getting out and
putting away equipment
6.1 Staff will adhere
to whole school planning and and assessment methods
6.2 Each pod will
be equally resourced in terms of staffing and access to resources, equipment and materials
6.3 The types and
colours of workbooks used throughout the school will be standardised
6.4 Staff will adhere
to whole school policies
6.5 Staff will employ
a variety of teaching styles in each lesson. Where possible children will learn through practical activity and first hand
experience. Resources and equipment will be of good quality, suited to the purpose and selected to enrich children’s
learning.
7.1 by encouraging
visits to and from the Pre-school and Junior school
7.2 by arranging
for members o the local community to visit and talk to the children
7.3 by providing
work experience placements for pupils from local secondary schools, colleges and universities
7.4 by participating
in local events
7.5 by welcoming
elderly members of the community into school to share their knowledge, skills and experience
7.6 by making educational
visits
Success Criteria
The policy is being used. Its principles are understood by children,
parents and staff.
