Marking Policy
Aims
- To provide praise and encouragement by recognising
what a child knows, understands and can do
- To identify the next steps in learning for that
child
- To encourage children to reflect on their work
- To indicate errors for correction
- To provide information and inform assessment
- To inform parents and others looking at the child’s
work
Method
- Work will be marked in the presence of the child
where possible. The constraints of the Literacy and Numeracy strategy make this difficult during the literacy and numeracy
hours
- Marking will take the form of written comments supported
by discussion with the child
- Comments may be formative or summative and in addition
to giving encouragement should relate to the learning objective
- The colour and medium used for marking is at the
discretion of the teacher but when making marks on a child’s work the teacher will be sensitive to the feelings of the
child about the work. Red should not normally be used.
- Words, phrases, ideas which demonstrate understanding
of present or past learning objectives may be marked discretely with a small star. These should be annotated with the reason
for the star.
- No more than 5 spelling errors should be indicated
for correction in any one piece of work
- Recurring spelling errors may be underlined
- Staff will ensure that all work has been dated
- Computation errors will be marked by a dot or by
indicating where the correction should be made
- Crosses to indicate mistakes will not be used by
adults
Success Criteria
The policy is being used
It is understood by children and parents
