Early Years Foundation Stage

Children are defined as having reached a good level of development at the end of the Early Years Foundation stage if they have achieved at least the expected level in:

  • the early learning goals in the prime areas of learning (personal social and emotional development; physical development and communication and language) plus
  • the early learning goals in the specific areas of mathematics and literacy

Year One

Phonics screening check. Over the past four years children were considered to have met the required standards in phonics if they could decode 32/40 or more real and non-real words containing the 44 phonemes of the English language.

Year Two

In Year Two, children are assessed in Reading, Writing, Maths and Science.
