What have we been learning in Term 1

Art Day Three

We had a wonderful final day of our art project! We began by looking closely at zoomed in images of leaves, noticing the incredible details such as the veins, edges and unique patterns. The children then studied real leaves and chose specific details to sketch carefully into their sketchbooks.

After break, inspired by Quentin Blake’s expressive style, we painted the shapes of leaves using beautiful autumnal colours reds, yellows and oranges. In the afternoon, the children layered their artwork by drawing over their painted leaves, using some of the sketching techniques they explored yesterday, such as crosshatching and blending.

It has been a fantastic three days of art, and the children have loved filling their sketchbooks with creative work inspired by Sir Quentin Blake.

Art Day Two

We had a fantastic morning learning all about tone and experimenting with different sketching techniques. The children explored how changing pressure and using methods such as crosshatching, stippling and blending can create a range of effects in their artwork.

Using these new skills, we completed observational drawings of autumnal treasures, including leaves, conkers, conker shells and feathers. The children showed incredible focus and creativity and Mrs Shakespeare was so proud when she came to see their amazing work!

In the afternoon, we continued developing our skills by drawing leaves using a variety of materials such as colouring pencils, oil pastels, pens and charcoal.

Take a look at some of our wonderful art below. We can’t wait for Day Three tomorrow!

Art Day One

Today we enjoyed our first art session, where we explored the wonderful world of Sir Quentin Blake, the much-loved author and illustrator. The children were excited to recognise his distinctive illustrations from our class reader George’s Marvellous Medicine and other favourite Roald Dahl stories.

We then listened to The Bear’s Winter House, paying close attention to Quentin Blake’s unique illustration style. Afterwards, everyone opened their sketchbooks and had a go at sketching their own bears, inspired by his lively and expressive drawings.

We can’t wait to continue our Quentin Blake inspired art on Monday and Tuesday.

Wanted Posters for the Big Bad Wolf

Our Year 1 children have been learning and performing the story of The Three Little Pigs. Today, they created Wanted posters for the Big Bad Wolf, including fantastic descriptions with excellent adjectives. Their drawings are amazing too!

George's Marvellous Medicine

The children have been enjoying our class reader, George’s Marvellous Medicine. Some of our Year 2 pupils have even taken on the role of reading aloud to the class, showing wonderful fluency and expression.

Handwriting in Year 1

Our Year 1 children have had a fantastic first day in their Year 1 classes. They have been working hard on their handwriting and number formation. They are already showing great focus and enthusiasm for their learning!
