What have we been learning in Term 6?

DT - Day Two

Design & Technology – Day 2

Today, we picked up our sewing needles once again as the children began stitching fabric onto their t-shirts. Some chose to add pockets, while others created shapes or sewed on their initials as part of their designs.

It was a tricky task, especially trying not to stitch through both sides of the t-shirt but with resilience, patience, and a bit of support, the children successfully completed the first stage of their creations. We’re so proud of their progress!

Today, the children began developing their sewing skills by learning the running stitch. Using wool and needles, they showed great determination, and with a little practice, many were able to stitch their initials and create simple patterns.

Later, the focus shifted to creativity as the children began designing t-shirts to celebrate Colebrook’s 50th Anniversary. We were incredibly impressed by their growing confidence, resilience, and enthusiasm. We’re excited to see what Day 2 will bring!

The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch

The children created some excellent Lego lighthouses to link to our English story of The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch!

Year One - The Tiny Seed

This week, we have been exploring the story The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle. We began by learning the story through storytelling and actions, which helped us remember the key events and language.

The children then completed a 'modelled write', where they rewrote the original story in their own words. Building on this, we moved on to innovating the story—changing parts of the plot to create our own versions. Have a look at some of our fantastic story maps showing these changes!

Next week, we’ll be using these story maps to help us write our very own original stories. We can’t wait to see where the children’s imaginations take them!

Active maths

This week in Year 1, we’ve been learning how to tell the time to the hour and half past the hour. To bring our learning to life, we took part in an exciting Active Maths lesson where we combined movement with maths!

Working in teams, we took on the challenge of matching different times to their corresponding clock faces. Not only did we have lots of fun, but we also built our confidence and accuracy in reading the time.

It was a fantastic way to get active while reinforcing key maths skills – well done, Year 1!
