What have we been learning in Term 4?

We enjoyed a fantastic morning of creativity and inspiration! We began by recapping what it means to be an artist, and it was wonderful to hear the children share such positive, growth‑minded ideas: “They make mistakes,” “They are resilient,” “If they put a dot in the wrong place, they can turn it into something else.” Their thoughtful responses showed just how confidently they are developing as young artists.

We were then introduced to the Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes. The children impressed us with the facts they could recall about Brazil and the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro, where she grew up. They spent time exploring her artwork closely and discussing what they noticed, how the colours and patterns made them feel, and what stood out to them visually. Many children commented on her use of bold, bright colours and even made insightful comparisons to artists we have studied previously, such as Paul Klee and Piet Mondrian.

After break, the children had the opportunity to experiment with printing techniques of their own. Using a variety of materials including; LEGO, stickle bricks, bubble wrap, foil and string they created wonderful textures and patterns inspired by Milhazes’ vibrant style.

We can’t wait to continue our artistic journey on Day 2 tomorrow! 🎨

What a wonderful afternoon we enjoyed in Badger Class!
It was fantastic to be reunited with Mike for our final session of the year. The children had a brilliant time building dens, climbing, and creating beautiful prints using stones and grass. We even spotted some tadpoles along the way!

Throughout the session, the children demonstrated all of our school values, and it was lovely to see them working together, exploring, and having fun.

Wonderful Writing

What a wonderfully busy week of writing it has been in Year One! Using their innovated story maps, the children created their very own versions of the fable How the Brazilian Beetles Got Their Gorgeous Coats.

Across four days, the class carefully crafted their stories in small, focused sections. Miss Osborne and Miss Arthurs were incredibly impressed with the children’s concentration, understanding, and imaginative ideas.

We are so proud of the progress they have made! Take a look at some of their fantastic work.

Passport to Rio

We have been having a fantastic time in our Geography lessons this term. This week, all three classes went on an exciting journey to Brazil! The children created their own passports and filled them with information about Brazilian culture, landmarks, food, animals, sport, and the vibrant carnivals that take place there. The teachers were incredibly impressed with how thoughtfully the children interpreted the information and how unique each passport turned out. Take a look at some of our fabulous work!

English - Year One

This term in English, we have been learning the story How the Brazilian Beetles Got Their Gorgeous Coats.

The Year 1 children have truly impressed Miss Osborne and Miss Arthurs with their wonderful retellings. It has been lovely to hear that many children have even been sharing and performing the story at home. This week, we got creative and changed the characters in our version of the tale. From sleepy sloths to majestic lions and amazing ants, it has been wonderful to see the children use their imaginations.

Today in English, we did some descriptive writing to bring our new characters to life. Miss Osborne and Miss Arthurs then used the children’s ideas to create illustrations of these imaginative characters.

Balancing in PE

Across the past two terms, we have been focusing on balance in PE. This week, the children worked cooperatively in pairs to shape their bodies into different letters of the alphabet. It was wonderful to see them experiment with a variety of poses and problem-solve how to create some of the trickier letters. The Year One children even incorporated their maths learning by directing their partners to use their left or right hand, arm or leg. Have a look at some of our pictures below!

Volcanic Explosion Experiment!

The children mixed bicarbonate of soda, water and washing-up liquid with vinegar and food colouring, then stood back to watch our very own volcanic eruption. The clapping and cheers of excitement say it all!

Science Week!
This week is National Science Week. To mark the occasion, each class chose a science topic they were excited to learn more about. The Badgers and Robins voted to explore volcanoes, and we’ve had a fantastic time diving into this explosive topic.

The children learned a range of new vocabulary linked to volcanoes and discovered how and why eruptions happen. Miss Arthurs even shared photos from her travels, including sledging down a volcano and roasting marshmallows, much to the children’s delight!

Afterwards, we created our own volcano templates and headed outside for a real‑life demonstration. Miss Osborne talked the children through the ingredients needed for our “eruption,” and everyone helped to add them to the mixture. The children were amazed to watch the pressure build inside the bottle and the lava-like liquid burst out of the top!

The children thoroughly enjoyed this hands-on science activity and are eager to continue exploring more exciting topics.

World Book Day Badgers Class

Week One

We’ve had a fantastic start to the new term!
The children have been busy diving into a range of exciting learning opportunities this week.

In Geography, they were introduced to Brazil, locating it on a world map and exploring how its climate is influenced by the equator.
In Science, we began comparing the similarities and differences between plants and humans.
During English, the class started studying the fable How the Brazilian Beetles Got Their Gorgeous Coats. The children enjoyed discussing the moral of the story and linking it to our school values.

It’s been a wonderful first week back, and we’re excited to continue our learning journey next week!
