What have we been learning in Term 5?

Combining 1p,2p and 5p in Year 2. If Colin has three coins, how much money could he have?

Alien and Astronaut Day

Mae Jemison

This week, the Year 1 children have started learning about astronaut Mae Jemison. Today, we created fact files about Mae, including everything we have learnt so far. Next week, we are looking forward to writing our own non-chronological reports about her.

Months of the Year

This week in Maths, we have been learning about the days of the week and the months of the year. We created our Year 1 birthday chart and used it to compare the months, identifying which had the most birthdays and which had the least. The children were excellent at ordering the months of the year and showed great enthusiasm and understanding throughout the activities.

Moving Pictures - Part Two

In Week 2 of DT, the children created their own levers to bring their moving pictures to life. They carefully followed their plans to design and build their levers before attaching them to their pictures. The children then pierced a hole and added a split pin to allow the mechanism to move. Take a look at some of their fantastic creations above.

Next week, the children will be developing their work further by adding sliders to enhance their moving pictures.

What did astronauts do on the moon?

In Week Three of our learning about The History of Space, we explored what astronauts did during their time on the Moon. The children created wonderful drawings and wrote captions to explain their ideas, take a look at some of their fantastic work!

We also discussed why the Moon landing was such an important event in history. Did you know that around 600 million people are believed to have watched it? The children then shared what they would do if they went to the Moon. Some brilliant ideas included “doing a backflip because there is less gravity”, “carrying out experiments” and “taking better photos and videos now that technology has improved”.

To finish the week, we enjoyed reading a selection of space‑themed books and figures kindly lent to us by author Neil Griffiths.

Moving Pictures - Design and Technology

Our DT focus this term is to design and create our very own moving pictures. In our first lesson, the children planned their backgrounds and learned all about levers and sliders, exploring how they work and how they are made. They then began creating the background for their moving pictures, showcasing some fantastic creativity.

This week, the children will be making their lever, followed by their slider in the coming lessons. Their designs are wonderfully imaginative, ranging from rockets and astronauts to aliens and planets. We can’t wait to see their finished moving pictures come to life!

Marvellous Maths in Year One

Last week in maths, our Year 1 children truly impressed us with their ability to add 9 to both single‑digit and double‑digit numbers. We explored the strategy of adding 10 and then subtracting 1. The children quickly spotted the pattern. They showed great confidence in applying this method to a range of different numbers. Take a look above at some of our fantastic maths learning in action!

Rocket Crash
